PARTING THE VEIL

Wayne Dyer’s publicist, Edna Farley, called me and said, “I’m publicizing a channeler who has written a book. Would you be interested in seeing a copy for a possible interview and article?” Before I could think about it, I said, “Yes.” After I hung up the telephone, I thought it odd that I had agreed, since “channeling” was outside my interests and expertise. I didn’t even really know what a channeler was, except what I had seen of Kevin Ryerson in Shirley Maclaine’s movie, Out on a Limb.

When I first opened the advance copy of the book Edna sent me, The Eagle and the Rose1, I instantly sensed that I was holding an important work. The book’s author, Rosemary Altea, is a British medium who talks to the living spirits of those who have physically died. As I mentioned before, I hadn’t reconciled my beliefs about life-after-death. So, as I read Altea’s case studies in which she discerned dramatic details about her client’s deceased relatives, I didn’t know what to think.

Still, I found the book fascinating and wanted to read more. Unfortunately, various duties hectically filled my hours, and I was only able to read a few pages each day. Finally, on a Saturday afternoon, when Michael was on a sailboat race and the boys were visiting friends, I had time to curl up with the book completely.

When I was nearly three-quarters of the way through reading about Altea’s case studies, a sudden and overwhelming revelation crashed through my consciousness. It hit me that Altea’s words were truthful and that her descriptions of communicating with the dead were a fact. At that instant, I felt a presence behind me on my right, and I began to sob. I recognized the presence as my Grandma Pearl, and I also sensed that she had orchestrated many of my recent miracles, including my receiving a copy of The Eagle and the Rose.

“Oh my God!” I said aloud through sobbing cries. “There really is life after death!” I felt my grandmother consoling me, telling me that everything was going to be okay.

This realization gave me comfort, and in the following days, I began talking to my grandmother during my meditations. I also discovered that mediumship had been studied by scientists for centuries, and that well-controlled studies within the past two decades presented convincing evidence that mediums actually communicate with the living spirits of dead persons.2 One of my overriding concerns, though, remained my relationship with Michael. I was now viewing him as a decidedly unspiritual person and feared that a breakup was inevitable. Still, I hesitated because I deeply loved him, and I absolutely detested the process of breaking up.

Three days after I finished reading Altea’s book, a woman named Renée Swisko called.
